Generative engines don't just match keywords and hand back a list of links. They build an answer in four broad steps, and GEO targets the last three.

  1. Interpret the query, the engine works out what you're actually asking.
  2. Retrieve candidate sources. It pulls relevant pages from a search index or its own crawler. This approach is often called retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG: the model retrieves real documents first, then writes with them sitting right in front of it.
  3. Synthesise an answer, it composes a single response drawn from those sources.
  4. Cite or name sources, it links or names the pages it leaned on.

Put simply, GEO comes down to three things: being retrievable (the engine has to be able to find and fetch your page), extractable (it needs a clean, direct fact or answer it can pull out), and citable (there has to be a reason to credit that fact to you). Core GEO techniques (what actually moves the needle)

The academic research on generative engines found that citation-friendly elements, statistics, quotations and clearly sourced claims, improved a source's visibility inside generated answers. That translates into a practical set of techniques you can start applying today. None of them is exotic. Most amount to good editorial and technical hygiene, sharpened for machine extraction.

Measuring GEO: can you track AI visibility?

Partially, and let's be honest about the limits. No search engine offers an official "AI rank tracker" API yet. GEO measurement has to blend a few imperfect signals instead of relying on one clean dashboard.

What is measurable today:

  • AI-referral traffic: sessions that land on your site by way of ChatGPT, Perplexity and other engines like them. Analytics tools such as GA4 will show these.
  • Prompt sampling: run a set of representative questions through the engines on a regular schedule, then log whether you're cited, and how.
  • Brand-mention monitoring, tracking where and how often your brand surfaces in generated answers.

Treat these as a triangulation, not a verdict. Anyone promising a precise, guaranteed number for AI citations is overselling it. The honest approach? Structured sampling paired with tooling, reviewed again and again over time.

Is GEO replacing SEO? (honest answer)

No. GEO builds on SEO; it doesn't replace it. Generative engines still lean on content that's crawlable, authoritative, and well-structured when they construct their answers. So your technical and on-page foundations stay prerequisites, not optional extras. A page an engine can't fetch or understand simply won't get cited, no matter how the algorithm evolves.

The right mental model: AI answers add a new distribution surface on top of the search index; they don't delete it. Rankings still matter, links still matter, site health still matters. GEO is the layer that turns that hard-won authority into citations inside AI answers. That's exactly why the two run together instead of one killing the other.
