AI Overviews Traffic Impact: How AI Overviews Affect Website Traffic

AI Overviews cut into click-through rates on the queries where they show up. Independent studies keep finding lower click-through even for pages that hold their rankings, once Google puts an AI answer above the classic results. The damage isn't spread evenly, though: informational queries take the hit, while transactional and local searches barely move. You can spot this pattern in your own Search Console data, and it won't take more than an hour.

Google's "AI Overviews" is the AI-generated answer block that sits at the top of Search. It isn't ChatGPT, Perplexity or Bing Copilot, those work differently, and we cover them separately in our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT. This page measures traffic impact and walks you through diagnosing your own site. If you want the response playbook, how to actually earn citations in the overviews, that's in our AI Overview optimisation guide. Every figure below comes from a named study you can check yourself. Where studies disagree, we've flagged it rather than blending everything into one tidy number.

Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic? The short answer

Yes, on the queries where they show up. When Google answers a search directly with an AI Overview, some users get what they need and never scroll down to the blue links. That means click-through rate on the classic organic results falls even when your rankings haven't budged. The giveaway in analytics is "impressions up or flat, clicks down": you still rank, you still get shown, but fewer people bother clicking through.

The mechanism sits above the traditional results, answers the query right there on the page, and offers a handful of cited source links. A searcher can stop at the answer and never click further (a zero-click search), click one of the overview's citations, or scroll past to the classic listings. Two of those three paths pull clicks away from the blue links you used to own outright.

You may still see this called SGE. Search Generative Experience was Google's experimental name for the feature before it launched as AI Overviews. Same thing.

Google's public position is that AI Overviews send "higher-quality clicks", people who click through after reading the summary are more engaged and better qualified, or so the argument goes. That claim and the independent CTR studies don't actually contradict each other. Fewer clicks can happen at the same time as those remaining clicks converting better. Which effect wins out on your site is something you can only find out by measuring both volume and quality, and that's exactly what the diagnosis and measurement sections below are for.

How much traffic do AI Overviews take? What the studies show

There's no single universal figure, and anyone quoting one is oversimplifying. What the research does agree on is direction: when an AI Overview shows up, click-through to organic results drops, and that drop hits hardest on informational, question-shaped queries. Why does the size of the drop vary so much from study to study? Because each one measures something different, real user behaviour, sampled SERPs, or clickstream panels, across different query sets and dates. The table below lines up the major studies side by side, so you can see the consensus and the spread at once.

Study / datasetKey findingScope & methodDate
Pew Research CenterUsers clicked a traditional result link on about 8% of visits with an AI summary present, versus about 15% without one; only around 1% clicked a link inside the summaryBehavioural panel of real US users' Google activity2025
AhrefsAverage position-one organic CTR roughly a third lower when an AI Overview is presentLarge-scale analysis of search results and CTR across many keywords2025
Seer InteractiveOrganic CTR fell sharply when an AI Overview appeared (from roughly 1.4% to under 1% on tracked terms)Aggregated client keyword and CTR sample2025
SemrushAI Overviews appear far more often for informational and question queries than for commercial or transactional onesStudy of AI Overview trigger rates by query intent2025

Pew and Ahrefs numbers don't line up cleanly, so treat this table with some care. One measures share of user visits, the other average CTR at a single position. Subtracting one from the other won't tell you much.

Sample composition matters too. A study weighted toward informational keywords will show a bigger overall impact than one covering a broad commercial mix.

Read these figures as consistent evidence of a real, meaningful decline. They aren't a precise percentage you can lift and apply to your own site without checking first.

Do cited sources get anything back? Yes, but only a small share. The overview displays link cards for the sources it pulls from, and landing one of those spots carries real value: it's the only visibility left on that query. Still, the user studies cited above show that only a minority of searchers actually click through on citations. That makes citation the defensive prize worth chasing. Miss the overview entirely on a query it now owns, though, and there's no path to that traffic at all.

Zero-click searches: the trend AI Overviews accelerate

A zero-click search ends right there on the results page. No click to an outside site. The user gets an answer straight from the SERP, whether it comes from an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a knowledge panel or just the results text itself. None of this started with AI. It's part of a shift in how Google works that's been going on for years.

This matters because AI Overviews are speeding up a trend, not starting it. Clickstream research from SparkToro and Datos (Rand Fishkin's 2024 analysis) found that a majority of Google searches already ended without a click to the open web, and that was before AI Overviews were widely rolled out. Roughly six in ten US searches produced no external click in that dataset. AI Overviews push that share higher on the queries they cover. But they're extending a direction of travel that predates them by years.

UAE SMEs mapping out an SEO budget shouldn't read this as a reason to walk away from search. It's really a shift in what to expect from it. Over time, a chunk of your top-of-funnel informational queries will end up zero-click. That raises the stakes on two fronts: getting cited as the source when there's no click to capture, and putting real effort behind the queries that still send traffic reliably. Commercial, transactional and local searches fall into that second group, since users need to reach a business to actually do something. Which is which comes next.

Which queries and websites are hit hardest

AI Overviews don't hit every kind of search equally. They show up most on informational and question-based queries, "how," "what," "why," "best way to", and least on transactional, navigational, and local-pack searches, where someone wants to buy something, reach a specific site, or find a business nearby. That distinction matters more than it might seem. It lines up almost exactly with how your site makes money.

Query typeAI Overview likelihoodTraffic riskDefensive move
Informational / questionHighHigh, CTR drops most hereEarn citations; see the AI Overview optimisation guide
Commercial investigation ("best", "vs", "reviews")MediumMediumStrengthen comparison and buyer-intent content
Transactional ("buy", "quote", "hire", "price")LowLowProtect and expand money pages
Navigational (brand terms)LowLowMaintain brand and entity signals
Local ("near me", city + service)LowLowInvest in local SEO and Google Business Profile

Publishers, blogs and informational sites feel this the most, since question queries make up most of their traffic. Ecommerce product pages, service pages and local-intent searches see far fewer overviews, so the money pages of a typical UAE business usually carry less risk than its top-of-funnel articles do. Segment instead of panicking. Measure which of your queries trigger overviews before you assume damage across the whole site. For most businesses, the exposure sits in one content type, not everywhere.

Did AI Overviews cause YOUR traffic drop? A 6-check diagnosis

Before you point the finger at AI Overviews for a traffic decline, test that theory first. Plenty of drops that get blamed on AI Overviews are really core-update fallout, seasonal swings or technical glitches, and each of those calls for a completely different fix. The AI-Overview pattern looks specific: impressions hold steady or climb, positions barely move, yet CTR and clicks drop on informational queries. Run through these six checks in your own Search Console and you'll have your answer within the hour.

2. Average positionGSC Performance, position metricPosition stablePosition dropping → ranking loss, see below

5. Timeline vs core updatesGSC dates against known update datesDrop not aligned to a core updateAligns with a core update → algorithmic
6. Segment comparisonSplit informational vs transactionalInformational hit, transactional stableUniform drop → site-wide technical/penalty

Google's algorithm cares about that boundary, and so should you. If your positions actually fell, or the drop shows up evenly across every query type and page, AI Overviews almost certainly aren't the culprit. You're looking at a ranking loss, a core update, a technical fault, or a manual action. Each of those needs its own diagnosis path, so work through our guide on why Google rankings dropped instead. This page sticks to one job: diagnosing the AI-Overview cause, and nothing else. Nailing that diagnosis is the whole point. Mistake a core-update drop for an AI-Overview loss and you'll burn months chasing the wrong fix.

How to measure the impact on an ongoing basis

Google Search Console doesn't split out AI Overviews, and that's the reality that trips people up. Impressions, clicks and positions generated within or beneath an AI Overview get folded right into your standard performance totals. There's no separate AI Overview filter to switch on. So diagnosis comes down to CTR patterns and manual checking rather than some ready-made report. Ongoing measurement, as a result, has to be built as a small monthly habit.

Track three things a month for your priority queries. Start with CTR in Search Console, and watch for it slipping even while impressions stay flat. Next, follow the impressions-to-clicks ratio as one trend line rather than isolated snapshots. Third, do a manual check by hand: search each priority query from a UAE location and note whether an AI Overview shows up, and whether it names you. On top of that, layer in GA4 landing-page sessions and your actual lead numbers as the layer that reflects business reality. Sessions and enquiries are what pay the bills, and they cut through the noise that CTR figures alone tend to produce.

Manual and automated signals need to back each other up, not just point in the same direction as a single number. That's why we run the full industry-standard stack here: GA4, Google Search Console, Ahrefs and Semrush.

Take Google's "higher-quality clicks" claim and test it against your own numbers rather than trusting it outright. If AI Overviews show up on your key queries, look at the conversion rate of whatever clicks you're still getting and stack it against your pre-overview baseline. Some sites find the traffic that remains actually converts better. Others don't. Either way, your lead data will tell you which camp you're in.

What to do about it: three honest response options

Once you know AI Overviews are hitting your traffic, you have three real options. This page won't repeat those methods; it just points you to the pages that cover each one in detail.

  1. Become the cited source. If the overview is going to answer the query anyway, be the site it cites. This is answer-engine work, and the full playbook, structure, schema, content patterns, is in our AI Overview optimisation guide and the wider discipline of answer engine optimisation.
  2. Rebalance toward lower-exposure queries. Shift content and internal-linking effort toward transactional, commercial and local queries, where overviews are rarer and clicks still flow. The exposure matrix above shows where to aim.
  3. Bring in professional AEO delivery. If this needs to become a managed programme, our AEO services page covers how we run it, and our broader AI SEO agency and LLM SEO work sit alongside it.

You'll sometimes see this called GEO, generative engine optimisation, meaning optimisation for AI search engines, not geographic targeting. Whatever the label, one honest line applies: nobody can guarantee an AI Overview citation, and any agency that promises one is telling you something no one can deliver. Good work does something different. It materially improves your odds of being the source the AI trusts.

AI Overviews and UAE search traffic

AI Overviews are already live for plenty of English-language queries in the UAE. Google rolled the feature out to more than a hundred countries starting in October 2024. So for UAE businesses, this isn't some future problem to plan around. It's already shaping informational queries in your market right now.

There's a genuine data gap worth being straight about: no public, UAE-specific study of AI Overview click-through exists yet. The headline figures above come largely from US and global datasets. That's exactly why the self-measurement approach in the diagnosis and measurement sections is the answer for UAE sites. Your own Search Console, plus a manual spot-check from a UAE location, tells you the truth about your queries. No global average can do that. The framework works the same way here.

Language is another wrinkle. AI Overview coverage isn't the same for English and Arabic queries, so a bilingual UAE business needs to check both separately instead of assuming the English results tell the Arabic story too; our Arabic SEO work covers that side. The logic behind moving early is simple. Most UAE competitors haven't measured or reacted to AI Overviews yet. Businesses that figure out their exposure and start earning citations now gain an edge while the field's still open.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?

Google's own answers push click-through down on the searches where they show up. Independent studies keep finding this: pages that hold their rankings still see fewer clicks when an AI answer appears above them. The damage isn't spread evenly, though. Informational queries take the hit; transactional and local searches barely budge. So no, you won't see the same effect across an entire site.

How much traffic do AI Overviews take?

It varies by study and query type. Pew, Ahrefs and Seer have all run user-behaviour and CTR research, and each finds a real drop in clicks when an AI Overview shows up, with informational queries taking the biggest hit. The exact percentages don't agree across methodologies. Check the study table above for each figure and its source rather than leaning on a single number.

Do AI Overviews send any traffic to websites?

Some do. Cited sources land link cards inside the overview, though user studies find that only a small share of searchers actually click them. Google says the clicks that do come through are higher quality. Being cited is still the defensive move: skip the overview entirely, and there's no path to visibility on that query at all.

What are zero-click searches?

Searches that end right on the results page, with no click to any outside site, mean the user got their answer straight from the SERP. Clickstream research found that a majority of Google searches already ended without an external click before AI Overviews even launched. AI Overviews just push that trend along faster; they didn't start it.

Which websites lose the most traffic to AI Overviews?

Publishers, blogs, and informational-content sites feel this most, since question-type queries trigger AI Overviews more often than not. Ecommerce product pages, service pages, and local-intent queries see far fewer overviews, so money pages are usually less exposed than top-of-funnel content. Don't assume site-wide damage before segmenting your own queries.

How do I know if AI Overviews caused my traffic drop?

Look for the signature: impressions holding steady or climbing, average position unchanged, but CTR and clicks dropping, mostly on question-type queries that now show an AI Overview. If positions actually fell, or the drop hits the whole site, something else is going on; check our rankings-drop diagnosis guide.

How do I measure AI Overview impact on my site?

Log monthly: CTR on your priority queries in Search Console, the impressions-to-clicks ratio, and whether an AI Overview shows up (and cites you) when you check those queries by hand from a UAE location. Layer GA4 landing-page sessions and lead data on top to get the business truth.

Does Search Console show AI Overview clicks separately?

No. Google folds AI Overview impressions, clicks and positions into the standard performance totals; there's no separate AI Overview filter for it. That's why the diagnosis leans on CTR patterns and manual query sampling, not some ready-made report you could just pull up and read.

What can I do about traffic lost to AI Overviews?

Three honest paths forward: earn citations in the overviews themselves (see our AI Overview optimisation guide), shift content toward transactional and local queries where exposure runs lower, or bring in professional answer-engine optimisation. Nobody can guarantee citations. If someone promises that, walk away.

Are AI Overviews affecting searches in the UAE?

AI Overviews do show up for plenty of English-language queries in the UAE now that Google has rolled the feature out internationally. There's no public study on UAE-specific traffic yet, though, so the smart move is to measure your own queries. The diagnosis framework above works the same for UAE sites, whether the content's in English or Arabic, and your own data will always beat a global average.
