AI Search vs Google Search: What UAE Businesses Need to Know
AI search hands you one synthesised answer built from a handful of cited sources. A Google search gives you a ranked list of links and lets you pick. Google still handles the overwhelming majority of searches in the UAE, just as it does everywhere else. But AI search is closing the gap fast enough that UAE businesses now need to show up in both. Earning a spot in each one takes a different approach.
This piece comes from the RATH Infotech team, guided by founders Sumeet Mehta and Manish Doshi.
Two quick scope notes before the comparison. Here, "AI search" means the channel: conversational answer engines such as ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, plus Google's own AI answer layers. That's distinct from "AI SEO," the discipline of optimising for those engines, which we define in what AI SEO is. Want the disciplines side by side rather than the channels? See our SEO vs AEO comparison. This page, though, sticks to the search channels themselves.
AI search vs Google search: the differences at a glance
Google and answer engines solve the same problem in completely different ways. Google gives you a list and lets you pick; an answer engine reads several sources on your behalf and hands back one composed answer with a short list of citations. That single difference ripples outward: how each is used, how ads show up, and, most important commercially, how a business gets seen at all. The table below breaks it down dimension by dimension.
| Dimension | Classic Google search | AI search (answer engines) | What it means for a UAE business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Result format | A ranked list of links across a page | One synthesised answer with a handful of cited sources | You compete to be chosen on Google, and to be cited in AI answers |
| How answers are produced | Crawl, index, rank, the user clicks a result | Retrieve sources, synthesise with a language model, cite a few | Being retrievable and quotable matters as much as ranking |
| Sources shown | Ten or more results per page | Typically a few citations inline | Fewer slots, clarity and authority decide inclusion |
| Query style | Short keywords | Longer, conversational, follow-up questions | Answer the real question in full sentences, not just keywords |
| Ads presence | Mature ad marketplace (Google Ads) | Emerging, ChatGPT ads are early | Paid options exist on both; the AI side is still forming |
| How you get visible | Rankings via SEO | Citations via answer-shaped, structured, authoritative content | The foundations overlap; AI adds requirements |
| How it is measured | Rankings, clicks, impressions in Search Console | Referral sessions and whether engines cite you | You need GA4 referrals plus citation checks, not just rankings |
How each one actually finds its answer
Classic Google runs a pipeline most people already know by feel: crawl the web, build an index, rank pages against your query, hand you a list. You click, you read. AI search flips that last step on its head. An answer engine pulls candidate sources, from its own index, a partner's, or a live web search, feeds them to a large language model, and gets back a single composed answer with a few citations pointing to what it actually used. Often you never see a results page at all. OpenAI built exactly this into ChatGPT when it launched ChatGPT Search in late 2024, giving it the ability to browse the live web and cite whatever it draws on.
The important caveat here: "AI search" isn't one uniform thing. Each platform sources its answers differently. Some lean on their own crawler, some on a search partner, some on real-time retrieval. Getting cited by one doesn't mean you'll get cited by another. The deep mechanics of how an engine decides which pages to quote are their own subject; we cover them in how ChatGPT picks its sources. For this comparison, hold onto one thing: retrieval plus synthesis replaces ranking plus clicking.
The AI search landscape in 2026 (and Google's own answer)
This channel isn't one product. It's a whole field of engines, and on top of that, Google itself is pushing AI answers directly into its own results. That's why the strict "Google vs AI search" framing falls apart: Google is becoming part answer engine through AI Overviews and AI Mode. The two surfaces aren't splitting cleanly; they're merging. Availability changes fast, so don't treat the UAE column as fixed fact. Use it instead as a prompt to check your own priority queries.
| Platform | Owner and how it sources answers | Available in the UAE? | Where visibility comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Search | OpenAI, browses the live web and cites sources | Yes, widely accessible | How to rank in ChatGPT |
| Perplexity | Perplexity, its own crawl plus real-time retrieval, always cited | Yes, widely accessible | How to appear in Perplexity |
| Gemini | Google, its models with access to Google's search data | Yes, widely accessible | Google fundamentals plus answer-shaped content |
| Copilot | Microsoft, built on Bing's index and web retrieval | Yes, widely accessible | Strong Bing-crawlable, structured pages |
| Google AI Overviews + AI Mode | Google, AI answers shown inside Google Search | Rolling out; check your queries | AI Overview optimisation |
Google's now folding AI answers straight into its own results, so the traffic question, what an AI answer sitting above the links does to your click-through, really belongs to that hybrid surface. We cover it separately in our guide to how AI Overviews affect website traffic.
Search behaviour in the UAE: what the data shows
Let's look at the numbers honestly. Google still handles the vast majority of the world's searches. Independent research keeps showing the same pattern: AI-engine query volume sits well below Google's, even though ChatGPT's user base has climbed into the hundreds of millions. No public dataset tracks AI-search adoption specifically in the UAE, so we won't make one up. Instead, we'll show you the global figures with their named sources, then walk you through measuring your own market.
| Metric | What the data shows | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Google search-engine share (global and UAE) | Around 90% of the market, the dominant channel by a wide margin | Statcounter Global Stats |
| AI search share of query volume | Far below Google's; AI engines handle a small fraction of total searches today | SparkToro / Datos research |
| ChatGPT usage scale | Hundreds of millions of weekly users, growing quickly | OpenAI announcements |
| UAE internet penetration | Near-universal, one of the highest rates worldwide | DataReportal, Digital: UAE |
| UAE device behaviour | Heavily mobile, bilingual English and Arabic search market | DataReportal, Digital: UAE |
Every figure above shifts over time, so check the current number at each named source before you quote it. That's exactly the discipline we apply to our own content. And since no UAE-specific AI-search study exists, the most reliable read on your own market is your own analytics: watch for referral sessions from domains like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in GA4. That tells you whether AI engines like ChatGPT are already sending you visitors, whatever the global averages say.
Will AI search replace Google?
Not according to current data. Studies of query volumes still show Google handling a far bigger share of searches than every AI engine put together, so a full replacement isn't what the evidence shows. The real shift is in format. Google itself is turning into part answer engine through AI Overviews and AI Mode, and people now expect a synthesised answer rather than just a list of links.
The realistic scenario is coexistence: AI answers will keep taking a bigger slice of discovery, but that doesn't mean one channel shuts the other off. That's a channel question. There's a related but separate one, does the discipline of SEO survive this shift?, and we answer it in will SEO die. We're not predicting doom, and we're not dismissing the shift either: the volume still points to Google, while the trend says add AI search on top.
What this means for UAE businesses
Should you keep investing in Google SEO? Yes. Google still handles the bulk of UAE search volume, so it stays your revenue foundation. The honest approach is to do both: keep Google fundamentals solid and start building AI-search visibility now, while most UAE competitors haven't bothered. Here's the good news, the two overlap more than you'd think. Pages that are crawlable, authoritative, and well-structured tend to rank on Google, and those are the same pages AI engines pull from and cite. Ranking well mostly feeds your AI visibility instead of competing with it. AI search just stacks a few extra requirements on top, answer-shaped content, structured data, clearly defined entities, but the foundation stays the same.
| Buyer-journey stage | Where the channel strength sits today | Recommended move |
|---|---|---|
| Early research question | AI search is strong for synthesised explainers; Google still huge | Publish answer-shaped, citable content on the questions buyers ask |
| Comparison and shortlist | Both, buyers ask an engine to shortlist, then verify on Google | Be citable in AI answers and well-ranked on Google |
| Ready to buy / transaction | Google leads for fresh, transactional, commercial results | Keep core SEO and conversion fundamentals strong |
| Local / near-me | Google dominates local intent today | Local SEO and Google Business Profile remain essential |
One UAE-specific point: search behaviour differs between English and Arabic audiences, and the citable-content playbook has to run in both languages if you serve both. Our Arabic SEO work covers that side. On budget, professional visibility work is scoped per site rather than sold at a fixed rate, request a quote and we will price it against your goals.
How to be visible in both: the four-step starting point
You don't need a different playbook for every search engine. What you need is one solid foundation, plus a handful of AI-specific additions. Here's where to start, each step points to the guide that covers the details.
- Benchmark where you show up. Search your category on Google first, then ask ChatGPT and Perplexity who they'd point you toward. Note whether your brand shows up in either answer.
- Keep your Google fundamentals strong. Technical health, authoritative content and rankings still form the base layer. Our SEO services cover that ground.
- Add answer-shaped, citable content. This is answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation: GEO stands for generative engine optimization, tuning for AI search engines rather than geographic targeting. Start with what AEO is and what generative engine optimisation is, then move to the platform playbooks: ranking in ChatGPT, appearing in Perplexity and AI Overview optimisation.
- Measure honestly. Track AI referral sources in GA4 and check whether the engines actually cite you. The full protocol sits in how to track AI citations.
There's a paid side as well. Advertising is showing up on AI surfaces now, and ChatGPT ads are one channel just starting to take shape. RATH counts among the first UAE-focused agencies running them. We practise what we describe here: this site runs an llms.txt file, structured data, and pages built to be cited, all verifiable once live. One plain caution, though: nobody can guarantee AI citations or rankings. Treat any promise like that as a red flag.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AI search and Google search?
AI search pulls together one direct answer from whatever sources it retrieves and cites a handful of them. Classic Google search just hands you a ranked list of links and lets you pick. The visibility game differs too. Google rewards ranking; AI engines reward being retrievable and citable. The comparison table above breaks down each dimension.
Is ChatGPT search better than Google?
Neither one wins outright; they're built for different jobs. ChatGPT Search shines when a question is complex and needs a synthesised, conversational answer. Google still has the edge on fresh local results, transactions and sheer breadth, and it processes far more queries overall. Most searchers, in practice, switch between the two depending on what they need. No study has yet measured this split specifically for the UAE market.
Will AI search replace Google?
Not based on the data we have today. Query-volume research still shows Google handling a far bigger share of searches than every AI engine put together. The format is what's shifting: Google itself now serves up AI answers through AI Overviews and AI Mode. Convergence and coexistence are the likely outcome here, not replacement.
How many people use AI search compared to Google?
ChatGPT claims a huge user base. Independent research on query volume tells a different story, though: AI-engine traffic still trails Google's by a wide margin, and the data table above lists each figure alongside its named source. The gap's closing, fast enough that UAE businesses should start working on visibility now, before it narrows further still.
Do people in the UAE use ChatGPT instead of Google?
Some studies do look at questions like this, but no public UAE-specific study has measured the split yet, so we'll say that plainly instead of inventing a number. Given how close to universal, mobile-heavy internet use is in the UAE, adoption seems plausible. Still, the real test is your own data: check AI referrers in your GA4 to see where you actually stand.
Does ranking on Google help you appear in AI search?
Largely, yes. AI engines pull from web indexes and live search, so pages that are crawlable, authoritative, and well-structured enough to rank also tend to get retrieved and cited. AI visibility does add its own requirements, answer-shaped content, structured data, clear entities. But it builds on top of Google fundamentals. It doesn't replace them.
Should UAE businesses still invest in Google SEO?
Yes, Google remains the dominant search channel in the UAE by volume, so it stays the revenue foundation. The honest strategy is both: keep Google fundamentals strong and add AI-search visibility work now, while few UAE competitors do it. Most engagements show measurable movement in three to six months.
How do businesses show up in AI search results?
AI engines pull from and cite sources that make this possible: crawlable pages, content shaped like answers, structured data, consistent entity information, and clear authority signals. You'll find platform-specific playbooks for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews in our dedicated guides. Nobody can guarantee citations. If someone promises that, treat it as a red flag.
What is Google doing about AI search?
Google is folding AI answers straight into Google itself. AI Overviews now sit above the classic results for plenty of queries, and AI Mode gives you a fully conversational way to search. So the old "Google vs AI search" divide is starting to blur into one surface. Our AI Overviews guide walks through what that shift means for website traffic.
How do you measure traffic from AI search?
Start in GA4. Referral sessions from domains like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai reveal AI-driven visits. Pair that with manual spot-checks of whether AI engines cite your brand for the questions that matter most to you. Our guide to tracking AI citations goes deeper into monitoring. We work with the full industry-standard stack.
