AI Overview Optimization: How to Get Your Site Cited in Google's AI Overviews
AI Overview optimization means shaping your web pages so Google's AI-generated answers, the ones that appear above regular results, are likely to cite them. It builds on standard SEO groundwork and adds a layer of answer-first content structuring on top. Google has confirmed there's no special markup for this. Citation comes down to relevance, clarity and authority instead.

RATH Infotech runs GEO the same way this guide lays out on its own site, and results here aren't padded with invented ranking factors or promises of guaranteed placement. Two definitions matter before we go on. "AI Overviews" refers to Google's AI-generated answer block at the top of Search, formerly known as the Search Generative Experience (SGE). It doesn't cover ChatGPT, Perplexity or Bing Copilot answers; those get their own guides. GEO, as used here, stands for generative engine optimization, meaning optimisation for AI search engines. It has nothing to do with geographic targeting. Founders Sumeet Mehta and Manish Doshi lead the team behind this work.
What is AI Overview optimization?
AI Overview optimization covers the on-page, structural and authority work that gets a page eligible for citation in Google's AI Overviews. It's not some new discipline bolted onto everything else. It's just SEO chasing a different scoreboard. Classic SEO wants the blue-link click in the results list. AI Overview optimization wants a spot among the handful of sources the overview actually names and links to.
AEO is a citation in the answer block, not a ranking position. That's the real comparison here: same foundations, different finish line. Crawlable, indexed, well-structured, authoritative, a page built like that is raw material for both SEO and AEO. What shifts is how you shape the answer and how you judge whether it worked. Want the full head-to-head across the wider discipline? Read our SEO vs AEO comparison.
AI Overviews sit inside two broader ideas. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the umbrella discipline of getting cited by answer engines generally, see what answer engine optimization is. Generative engine optimization (GEO) takes that same thinking and stretches it across multiple AI engines at once, see what generative engine optimization means. AI Overview optimization, by contrast, is just the Google-specific slice of that work.
What are Google AI Overviews (and where did SGE go)?
Google AI Overviews sit above the standard results for plenty of queries, pairing a short AI-written answer with source cards linking out to the pages that answer came from. The feature grew out of the Search Generative Experience. SGE was just the experimental name; Google renamed it "AI Overviews" once it left opt-in testing and became a live part of Search.
The rollout timeline matters if you're planning around it. AI Overviews launched to general users in the United States in May 2024. Google then expanded the feature beyond the US to more than 100 countries that October. In practice, the block shows up for informational and how-to queries, and the source cards give cited publishers a visible, clickable path even when the summary already answers most of the question inline.
How Google chooses AI Overview sources
Google's AI writes the overview, and it draws on Search's index. It doesn't invent sources; it summarises and cites pages Search already surfaces for the query. So cited links come from pages that are indexed, snippet-eligible, and judged relevant and reliable for that specific question. A page that can't show up as a normal snippet won't make it into the overview either.
Here is the honest part most guides skip: Google does not publish a separate "AI Overview ranking factors" list. There is no documented, AI-specific algorithm you can reverse-engineer. What Google does publish is its core Search quality guidance, helpful, reliable, people-first content and the Search Essentials, and that guidance is what governs which pages are eligible to be grounded and cited. Anyone selling you a secret list of AI Overview ranking signals is guessing; the defensible approach is to satisfy the documented quality guidance and structure your answers so they are easy to lift.
How to appear in Google AI Overviews: a 7-step process
Being cited doesn't come from flipping a switch or slapping on some markup. You earn it, and only by doing seven things well and in the right order. The early steps decide whether you're even eligible to be grounded; the later ones decide whether Google reaches for you as the source. We build this checklist into every page. This one included.
| # | Step | What to do | Why it matters for AI Overviews | Tool / verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Indexation & snippet eligibility | Confirm the page is indexed and not blocking snippets | Only indexed, snippet-eligible pages can be grounded and cited | URL Inspection in Google Search Console |
| 2 | Answer-first paragraphs | Answer the target question in the first two sentences under a matching heading | Gives the model a clean, self-contained block to lift | Manual read; page CMS |
| 3 | HTML-native fact tables | Render tabular facts as real HTML tables, not images | Structured facts are easier to parse and cite than prose | Rich Results Test; browser view-source |
| 4 | Article & FAQPage schema | Mark up the page with Article and FAQPage structured data | Helps machines understand content and supports other result types, a clarity aid, not an eligibility requirement | Rich Results Test |
| 5 | Entity & author clarity | Name the author, keep brand facts consistent, use `sameAs` links | An unambiguous entity is easier to trust and attribute | Schema markup; manual review |
| 6 | Authority & citation-worthiness | Earn mentions and links from sources Google already trusts | Reliability signals decide which eligible page gets cited | Backlink and mention tracking |
| 7 | Freshness & maintenance | Date pages and update them as facts change | Time-sensitive answers favour current, maintained sources | Content review calendar |
Step 1: check indexation and snippet eligibility
Run the page through the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console first. If it isn't indexed, or a `nosnippet`/`max-snippet` directive is choking off previews, fix that before anything else. Everything that follows is wasted effort on a page nobody can surface.
Step 2: front-load a question-shaped answer
Get the full answer into the first two sentences at the top of the page, and phrase it the way an actual searcher would ask the question. Put a heading over it that echoes that same phrasing. That opening block is the part a model can pull out cleanly. Bury the answer further down, and it might as well not exist.
Step 3: turn facts into HTML tables
Any comparison, spec or list of figures needs a real HTML table, not a screenshot or a paragraph. Machines can read the structure directly, so quoting those facts accurately gets a lot easier.
Step 4: add Article and FAQPage schema (honestly)
Google states no special markup makes a page eligible for AI features, so we're implementing Article and FAQPage structured data with eyes open about its limits. Schema helps machines understand the page and can earn rich results, but it's not a golden ticket into the overview. We're adding it because it pulls weight in several places at once, not because it guarantees anything.
Step 5: make your entity and authorship clear
Naming the author matters, and so does keeping brand facts consistent everywhere. Link your profiles together with `sameAs`. An engine trusts and credits sources it can identify without ambiguity.
Step 6: build authority and citation-worthiness
Among eligible pages, only the sources judged reliable end up cited. Get mentioned and linked by reputable sources in your field, that's the same authority-building work that drives classic rankings, and it decides overview citations too.
Step 7: keep content fresh and maintained
Update your pages and revise them when the facts change. For time-sensitive queries, a page that's current and well-maintained beats one that ranked well but hasn't been touched in months. We apply exactly this process to rath.ae, llms.txt, structured data and citation-ready pages, so you can check the method on the very site that teaches it.
What AI Overviews do to your traffic
Honest trade-off first: for informational queries where the overview answers the question outright, it can cut clicks to the underlying pages, since the searcher already got what they came for without leaving the results. Pretending otherwise helps nobody. The defensive play is to be the cited source. A cited page keeps a visible, clickable path in the answer block. A page competing for the same query without a citation loses even that.
Resist generic industry click-through numbers, even the ones quoted with total confidence. The only figures worth acting on are yours. Measure your priority queries before they gain an overview, then measure them again after. Let that before-and-after data decide where you push and where you accept the trade, not some headline statistic pulled from somewhere else.
How to measure AI Overview visibility
You can't manage what you don't measure, and a standard ranking report won't tell you whether an overview cited you. Use three complementary methods, each with a known limitation, and log the results on a fixed monthly cadence. The feature changes quickly.
| Method | What it tells you | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Manual query sampling | Whether an overview appears for your priority queries and whether you are cited | Results vary by location, personalisation and time, sample from a UAE location on a clean profile |
| Google Search Console | Clicks and impressions on the queries where you appear | AI Overview interactions are folded into standard Search performance reporting, not broken out, verify the current reporting state |
| Third-party AI-visibility trackers | Citation and mention tracking across queries at scale | Coverage and methods differ by tool; treat figures as directional, not absolute |
The method almost nobody uses is disciplined manual sampling, and it's the one that actually tells the truth. Pick a set of questions your customers really ask, check them from a UAE location every month, and note whether your page gets cited, mentioned, or left out entirely. That log is your real scoreboard.
Why you're not showing up: 8 common mistakes (and the opt-out)
Most rejections trace back to the same short list of avoidable mistakes. Work through them in order. The first two are eligibility blockers, so no amount of content polish will help until you fix those.
| Mistake | Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Page not indexed | Never appears in Search at all, let alone overviews | Submit and verify indexation via URL Inspection in Search Console |
| Snippets blocked | Page ranks but is never quoted | Remove `nosnippet`/`max-snippet` restrictions where you want visibility |
| Answer buried below the fold | Page is relevant but nothing clean to lift | Move a two-sentence answer to the top under a matching heading |
| Headings don't match the question | Content is present but hard to align to the query | Rewrite H2s in the searcher's question phrasing |
| Thin or duplicated answers | Little unique, quotable value | Add specific facts, figures and original explanation |
| Facts locked in PDFs or images | Numbers exist but machines cannot read them | Publish the same facts as HTML text and tables |
| No entity or author clarity | Source is hard to attribute or trust | Add author bylines and consistent `sameAs` entity signals |
| Ignoring measurement | No idea whether anything is working | Run monthly query sampling and log citations |
You control appearance with the same standard snippet directives that govern regular previews: `nosnippet`, `data-nosnippet`, `max-snippet` and `noindex`. There's no switch that targets AI Overviews alone. These controls affect classic snippets too, so using them to stay out of overviews will also cut into your normal search previews. Weigh that trade-off before applying them. As for eligibility, the prerequisites are laid out in our technical SEO checklist.
AI Overviews in the UAE: what Dubai businesses should know
UAE businesses are looking at an unusually open field right now. Google's October 2024 expansion pushed AI Overviews well past the US into over 100 countries, and the block now shows up for plenty of English queries seen from the UAE. Coverage still varies by query and language, though, so check your own priority queries from a UAE location rather than assume anything. That variability is actually an opening: most local SMEs haven't structured their pages for citation yet. A clear, well-built page can beat a bigger but vaguer competitor for the overview slot, at least until the space fills up.
RATH Infotech has served Dubai and all UAE since 2014, and the early-mover logic is the whole point: we apply this methodology to our own site because the cost of waiting is watching a competitor become the source Google reaches for first.
Two practical notes matter here. Searchers in this market ask in both English and Arabic, and answering well in both widens the set of queries you can be cited for. Our Arabic SEO work covers that side.
What AI Overview optimization costs
There's no licence fee for AI Overviews, no placement fee, no pay-to-play route in. Citations can't be bought. The real cost is the SEO and content work that earns them. What's expensive isn't a tool or a fee, but the time it takes to do the seven steps properly and keep them current. Free tools such as Google Search Console and the Rich Results Test handle the verification side.
If your site is delivered rather than built in-house, we scope that work inside our AI-search practice and quote it per site once we've had a look. For the wider picture on organic pricing, see our SEO packages; to get your own site assessed, request a growth audit.
FAQ
What is AI overview optimization?
Google's AI Overviews cite pages that are built to be cited: answers up front, headings phrased as questions, facts laid out in HTML tables, entities that are clearly defined, and the usual technical SEO groundwork. Google has said flat out that there's no special markup for this. You earn a citation through relevance, clarity and authority. You don't buy one.
How do I appear in Google AI Overviews?
Ensure the page gets indexed and qualifies for snippets. Answer the target question in the first two sentences, right under a matching heading. Back it up with an HTML table, and add Article and FAQPage schema. Build topical authority from there. That covers the full seven-step checklist, in order, laid out above.
How does Google choose AI Overview sources?
Google's AI generates the overview using its Search index as the foundation; the links it cites come from indexed, snippet-eligible pages the system deems relevant and trustworthy for the query. There's no separate "AI ranking factor" list from Google. Its core Search quality guidance still applies.
Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?
No special markup gets you into Google's AI features. Google says so directly. Structured data like Article and FAQPage still earns its keep, though, it helps machines parse your content and feeds other result types. That's why we build it in: a clarity aid, not a golden ticket into the answer block.
Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?
They can, on informational queries where the overview answers the question outright. The defensive play is being the cited source: cited pages keep a visibility path that non-cited pages lose. Measure your own before-and-after data rather than trusting generic industry click-through claims.
Are AI Overviews available in the UAE?
Google rolled out AI Overviews to more than 100 countries beyond the US back in October 2024, and plenty of English-language queries from the UAE now trigger them. That said, coverage isn't uniform across every query or language. Check your own priority search terms from a UAE-based location rather than assuming they're all covered.
Why is my site not showing in AI Overviews?
Usual causes: the page isn't indexed, `nosnippet` or `max-snippet` is restricting the snippet, the answer sits buried mid-page, headings don't line up with the phrasing of the question, or stronger sources have already claimed the topic. Work through the mistakes table above in order, and start with eligibility.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
You can prevent content from appearing with the standard snippet controls: `nosnippet`, `data-nosnippet`, `max-snippet`, or `noindex`. These are the same mechanisms that govern ordinary snippets. There's no opt-out that targets AI Overviews alone, so any of these controls will also strip your classic search previews. Weigh that trade-off before you flip the switch.
How do I measure AI Overview visibility?
Manual sampling of priority queries from a UAE location on a clean profile forms one leg of this. Google Search Console performance data is another, since AI Overview interactions now get folded into standard reporting. Third-party AI-visibility trackers round out the picture. Log citations every month, because the feature shifts too fast for a one-off check to hold up.
Who is the best AI overview optimization agency in Dubai?
RATH Infotech practises AEO on its own site, using llms.txt, structured data, and citation-ready pages, and has served Dubai and the wider UAE since 2014. There's no independent ranking yet for this fledgling specialism, so any self-crowning claim deserves a sceptical eye. Judge us instead by the method laid out in this guide.
